Tokhuah Rock that jars the the soul into a state of euphoria is rare. I find myself screaming in duet then falling into a trance from the weaving of sounds that in another moment explodes my mind into places I have never been before. Djunah makes me thirsty for more every time one of their songs ends.

benjamin d.a. hold shit, front to back, forget the favorite track selection, bc even this track is made better when you hear how Grooming transitions into it and immediately reinforces the album's "sci-fi film" influence. like curtains opening into angular melodies that'll you'll be hearing in your head for days. Lopsided is a fucking masterpiece. I can't imagine how it's going to translate live. How in the hell Djunah topped their debut album is beyond me but everyone else can maybe stop music already. Favorite track: Phaethon.

pinkytheent I love a record that makes me really struggle to pick a favorite song. Once again, Djunah bury us in a volcanic blast of intense red wrath mixed with quavering vulnerability. The album art is fitting; the direct stare mixed with the music creates a sense of accusation or the cold regard of a Sekhmet-like entity, here to pitilessly purify the world of us. I love the expert blend of driving high-energy noise with jarringly emotional melody. I got chills and will be processing this one. Favorite track: Lopsided.

Grooming 00:50
When it’s over, I want to watch you wash your face. When it’s done, I want to see you wash your face And wash your mouth ’til I erase.
2.
Phaethon 03:29
My heart will crush — my voice, my chariot, Two reins, my tongue and horses set to run. Who wakes the world will sulk, will ever know Amazing awe but never ever love. Who reins the reins, reins the reins. The earth to hush my hell so serious Could beg for shame but never stall the day I turn to white meadows, ash rivers dry, And drag the sky to make the heavens slip. For what my heart in hate will tear apart Are sins not mine: a load, a light, a climb My heart will crush, my voice, my chariot, To jettison the life, life couldn’t quench. So arrange, make way, Father. Brace for blaze. Kings grow base and earth complains Who reins the reins, reins the reins.

Hallway 04:01
This hallway’s to my release And always at my side When everything that I want Is tearing me apart. Mary sent you in To tarry by my side. Now everything that I love Is tearing me apart. It's tearing me apart. I was only joking. I was only joking. Shameful heart, Let me fade away. I’ve been aching on Since five, six, eight. Watch me hate on hate While I’m suffering. I was five, six, eight. I was five, six, eight. I was only joking. I was only joking. This hallway’s to my release And always at my side Everything that I want Is tearing me apart.

My rubber face could take a punch. I’m red thigh high to marabou. I’m candy-striped to slipper mule. My rubber face could take a punch. Candles electric, soft plates in plastic, Thawed shrimp and red jelly — This night could take forever. My rubber face could take a punch. The nylons are mantle-nailed. My vision goes all to braille. Shaved down to nightgown, Up in my bedroom — now Sing, choir. This is dire. What’s that I hear on the roof? He’s come for me. You’ll think I’m here, but I’ve gone far, Far away now, far off in winter, thick With icing, high, high in the sled, wet In red velvet, steam rising off our hot, Hot hair, the deer’s every little bell evaporating — Oh glory to bedsheets, I’m in excelsis! How, How the air doesn’t hurt now. I know This should sting so high up in space. I know this should hurt, but we’re so close, Close in the sled. I cry, “Drive! Drive til I’m —”

Cover your heads. No one escapes my hell On all you know. Seven winds I send For mistakes of men, So hold yours close. Cover your heads. No one escapes my hell On all you know. Mother has wept Seven plagues To come down slow. Seven hells I ripen in flames At your doors. The sent eye sends Seven thieves To strip your homes. Seven suns to blast the walls And shatter the remains Of the trash that you praise. It’s nighttime for your industry. Your silence surrounds me. Say goodbye. God sends me. It’s my time and my love, And I’ve come for your men. Seven winds I send For mistakes of men. Cover your heads, Cry for your sons Eating the wind. I sound out the end.

Lopsided 05:38
I'm afraid I'm made of tin. I can't remember. No symmetry. I’m dog-eared, One half a wave, slanted. I was too young for men When she said no, You’re too old to reach for that. Too old, too young — Maybe that's why I'm obsessed With the ages of things. I couldn't wait to grow up, And when I did, I was too old. The way one side grows When you double it — It's two people. Neither is me. Neither is how I wanted it. I don't love imperfect things. I don't know how — I wasn't loved for lack of symmetry. And yet it was fascinating, Anything that would hang. What's so wrong? They brushed me back, All their disgust so disgusting. The hug that could not complete itself — It has to be a circle. It has to be an exchange. The only thing I can't change — I'm all left ear And only half hear. This sound's all the way From my mama's shame. I'm all the way. Sounds of the year, Reactions at home, These mountains to fear — It's like nothing at all. Nothing. Nothing.

Butchering 03:28
Carve, God, clean, cut, and dress me. Your knife-wiped Apron drenched to the waist in me, knot Four lengths of string. Each act of severing, Each stroke to clean me, strip me, wash me, Exaltation. My failures, your vocation. Your ablutions, my ablation, to wrench, Rinse, rip, stitch me. You strap like a butcher And spare like a saint. Cut four lengths, separate. Each of my ribs sawed, rubbed, and frenched I think Was fascinating. Now each of my bones Standing in a perfect crown — I’m just the cage You turned inside out. I want to feel you Rip me in and out ’til you think you Understand. You’d think they’d understand — So if you tie, tie it tight, Red, blue veined, pink pored, and white. Trussed, I couldn’t, I wouldn’t in that room. Free, I don’t know — I get wild.

Petting 03:06
Your attention’s like a prize. It’s hard to hold like a terrier Or a handful of oil. Briefly I have it. Briefly I hold it, And I hear from you some random thing You thought of. Heaven’s an awful price. Your precious ear gets me so severe. The photos help But just sometimes. They’re just not the time I filled your mouth with ice cream and You said it wasn’t that good. I love when I’m with you And you crumble, The way you implode. All of you scatters then, Crittering from this to that And back again. I take so much pleasure in that. You’re so big but gentle as a mouse Whenever I’m in your space, And I can’t imagine yet Whether I would make you pet. I take so much pleasure in that. I take so much pleasure in that. I take so much —

Reining 02:56
I’m not a person, and I want to be Loved not for self but ability. My competition mouth and glittering eye Go to the rider who ends my wild, naked life. I’m just a body to share and gait to shape, And there’s so much earth to dominate. They say, girl, give over the animal To little men with the wherewithal That they might brush my hair and steal each gnat And with my tail tie a tourniquet, Or bind me in a button braid And leave me soaking on my hay. I think I’d do well as property — I ache to serve men in pageantry. I’m a showpiece. I prance, I preen, I’m sharp, I’m soft, I’m hard, I bite. I’m warm and unrelenting. These are things Men like. And me, I just like things. So take thee hoof, take thee tooth and thigh. I’ll take hand, purse, and ribbons to fly. Don’t think I’d mind to be well-heeled once shod, Long as the heel is high and the rider God.
10.
Want you out of my house. You stained my head. I swallow my heart With evil things to say. Would you find me? Well, you found me And you want me. Now you’re leaving Me the mercy of your seasons. It finds me far away. Oh good God in me, what’s inside of me? Half a memory — I don’t breathe. I don’t breathe. I lay out my heart so loud. Would you find me? Well, you found me And you want me. Now you’re leaving Me the mercy of your seasons. My God, it’s so loud. I make the sound that makes me I. I make the sound that names me I, Which is a circle, Which is a circle. Distance is no safer place. What blindness owes Perception pays and pays, Which is a circle. Would you find me? Well, you found me And you want me. Now you’re leaving Me the mercy of your seasons. I lay out my heart so loud. It's so loud. But I won’t be on my station. I’ll be on my way home. I’ll be on my way. I’ll be on my way.

about

“Femina Furens” fuses influences from poetry (Gerard Manley Hopkins, Sylvia Plath, John Donne) and heavy music to tell the story of diagnosis and continuing recovery from complex post-traumatic stress disorder, or C-PTSD. The album’s title comes from the Latin for “furious woman." The artwork is inspired by representations of the divine feminine in 1970s sci-fi metal art.
